Confident Photographer = Confident Client = Confident Photographer
Confidence, confidence, confidence. Oof…this is a tough one sometimes for photographers. If you’re just starting out, your confidence can be kind of rocky, but you need confidence to make sure your clients trust you and are confident in you. It’s like the chicken and the egg.
So if you’re scratching your head with this conundrum, let me calm you a bit: there is no right order or answer. The truth is, to get confidence you need experience. The more experience you get, the more confident you will be in photoshoots because you will feel more in control. How do you get experience? By photographing people until it hurts. This may not alway be a money-making situation in the beginning, but the payoff is huge. Your client will follow whatever lead you give them. If you feel shaky and unsure and can’t seem to fake it till you make it, your client will feel that and go along with it. If you feel in control and like you know what you’re doing and where to lead her, she will feel that and go along with it. You are her leader, no matter which way you steer her.
Truth: I have never had a client show up to a photoshoot with no fear. The very first thing EVERY client says to me when they show up for their shoot is “I’m so nervous. Excited…but so nervous.” They are nervous because for some reason they believe that out of all the women in the world, SHE is the ONE woman I will not be able to photograph well. It’s my job to prove her wrong and making sure she knows I have her back and that I’m going to take care of her is my number one priority, friend.
You know what photographers are? Problem solvers. We have a woman in front of us that has a problem. Her problem is that she wants to look and feel beautiful and she wants visual proof of it. We are the problem solvers that, in the flash of mere minutes, have to come up with a mixture of ingredients and put them all together to create magic. Lighting, posing, and composition. Those are your 3 ingredients.
Lighting is easy: where is it? Go there. Done. Composition can be tricky if you’re just starting out, so for this I say always take several croppings of the same photograph so you can learn what work and what looks best to you. I know posing can throw some photographers off but doing some research on Pinterest, magazines, and on other photographers you love will help out tremendously.
