First Pregnancy + Covid
K was so excited for her maternity session and I’m used to that. First-time mommas with their first-time bumps…the excitement is definitely contagious. But this session was more than that, if you can imagine.
Not being pregnant during a pandemic, it never dawned on me what it would be like for a woman celebrating her first pregnancy. Turns out, it can be pretty isolating and not just a little bit of a bummer. K expressed how excited she was at having a healthy pregnancy and having the time to prepare for her little one, but it still wasn’t the experience she expected or hoped for. Not being able to be out with that belly, enjoying others enjoying her bump (I mean…I remember those days. The smiles, winks, and “awwwwww….” that came along with all the standard questions we pretend we don’t like but honestly we do because IT’S A BIG DEAL TO US)….it can be a bit disappointing. Masks hide all those sweet smiles that come from doting strangers. It cheats mamas-to-be out of a time-honored tradition of people honoring our big fat bellies. It’s the only time in our lives a big fat belly is revered and cooed over! Though bringing a new life into the world is an everyday occurrence, it’s not an everyday occurrence to each individual woman that is fascinated with the changes in their body, all while falling in love with another human being that we haven’t met yet. Again—IT’S A BIG DEAL!
So…what to do? Yes, come on in for a day of hair, makeup, outfit changes, photography, and solely being in the spotlight for a day. I mean…talk about celebrating!
K and I took our time and really enjoyed ourselves. It was a slow day where she could relax and allow that belly to be on full display and get the full attention it deserved.
Taking care of yourself does in fact mean treating yourself to days when it’s all about you. Because, you know…sometimes it just is all about you, and that’s just glorious. #noapologies
