I Have a Confession to Make... Pittsburgh Portrait Photographer
I'm a Portrait Photographer. There, I said it!! That's right...I'm a PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER! OK, let me explain. I recently had a discussion with an acquaintance-friend about what it is, exactly, that I do.
Her: "So what is it that you do, exactly?" Me: "I'm a photographer." Her: "Yes, but what kind?" Me: "The kind that takes photographs." Her: "Hahahaha...no, I mean, what is it exactly that you specialize in?" Me: "Women." Her: "Yes, but I mean...boudoir? Fashion? Beauty....?" Me: "Yes. And a bunch more titles if you want them..."
And she did. So I thought, well if she needs titles to be able to wrap her head around what I do, then maybe other women do too. So here we go.
I'm a boudoir photographer.
I'm a fashion photographer.
I'm a maternity photographer.
I'm a beauty photographer.
I'm a bridal boudoir photographer.
I'm a bridal portrait photographer.
I'm a mama/daughter/grandma/sister photographer.
I'm a best friends photographer.
I'm a senior/teen photographer.
I'm a professional/branding portrait photographer.
PHEW! And you know what else? I mix, muddle and mush all those genres above at any give time at any given session, cuz that's how I roll.
Oh wait...then there's the personal creative projects I like to work on just so I can purge my head.
But, let me say that when someone asks me what I do for a living I say that I am a "portrait photographer specializing in women." That is typically met with curiosity and so, if asked, I will explain further. But why do I keep it that general? Because it's true; I am a portrait photographer and I do specialize in women for that portrait photography. All of the titles I just listed above fall under that umbrella, do they not?
The most recognizable term I can use is "boudoir photographer" (which is so funny to me because when I started this business 7 years ago only about 1 out of every 10 people knew what I was talking about. Now it's such a huge trend!) but if I only use that term then I'm really shortchanging myself, aren't I? I'm also only appealing to one very specific population of women, which then cuts me off from growing my business because it cuts me off from all the other populations. And listen, there is absolutely nothing wrong with being super-duper-uber specialized in only boudoir. I know quite a few photographers that do and they are beautifully successful. I just feel like if you look through my blog you'll see I just don't only fit into that genre and that's a good thing for me because I like throwing myself out of my comfort zone anytime I can.
Wanna know what else I do? Multi-media professional branding as well. That's a buzzword right now, I know. But over time, somehow we've developed a track record for it and people keep asking for it so, here we are! You may not have known this, but we are a one-stop-shop in terms of professional branding. Based on information we gather from our clientele, we create a professional personality/public image (if necessary), I provide beautiful professional beauty portraiture based on that personality/public image, to be used in all manner of social media, we create awesome cinematic films for your business based on whatever it is you need: about me, products, my work, what I do...etc., and we also provide original music to go along with those films. Not only do we work with you, if need to be, to release all of the multi-media we have captured for you, but we can also help you to execute your business plan through professional consulting as well.
So basically, we're like a triple an infnite-threat. Put everything together and whoa...I believe the word is unstoppable?
Now, any questions?
