Moms, Daughters, and Breast Cancer
Marta contacted me about setting up a shoot for herself. She was ready to take the plunge and take a day to focus on herself while allowing me to photograph her. We emailed. We messaged. We plotted. We planned. We were both getting pretty excited.
Very shortly after making it official, her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer and all of a sudden, a session for Marta became a day for her and her sister. I couldn’t be more thrilled to tell you that, beautifully, it didn’t end there. Their mother decided that this was an opportunity she couldn’t pass up. She was also scared this opportunity would not present itself again.
Though Nina is still fighting her fight, I have absolutely no doubt she will win. See that powerhouse in the red dress? That’s Nina—aka: warrior woman. She’s a badass superhero now. She’s a fighter, a kicker of cancer’s ass, and one sexy, beautiful gift to this world.
I’m not sure I ever really thanked Marta for not only trusting me with her own photos, but trusting that I could provide a safe and fun space for her Nina and Fran too.
I know we women spend more time berating our bodies for not being what we wished they could be in our eyes, but it’s moments like these that gracefully remind me to be thankful for the strength, fortitude, and forgiveness our bodies give us without even waiting for us to ask.
To all you superheroes out there: we see you and we honor you. You’re part of a club you didn’t join voluntarily, but your fight has not gone unnoticed. #champion
